The East Region Health Protection Service (ERHPS) was established in December 2023 to provide expert public health protection across NHS Borders, NHS Fife, NHS Forth Valley, and NHS Lothian. Our dedicated regional team works to prevent and control communicable diseases and environmental health risks, responding swiftly to outbreaks and safeguarding the health of individuals and communities.
What we do
We work with the Local Authority Environmental Health departments, Public Health Scotland and a range of other partners in the following areas:

Communicable Disease Control
Management and surveillance of diseases like measles, whooping cough (pertussis), and more. We work with health professionals, care providers, and the public to reduce risk and contain outbreaks.

Environmental, Chemical Incidents
Advice and coordination on chemical incidents, contaminated land, water safety, air quality, and other environmental threats.

Port Health Information
Monitoring and managing health risks and potential infectious diseases at airports and seaports, providing advice and support.

Health Surveillance, Reports & Partnerships
Intelligence on disease trends, public health activity and planning across the East Region.
Includes links to surveillance data, outbreak reports, and to Joint Health Protection Plans developed by each NHS Board and partners.
ERHPS is not directly involved in delivering vaccinations. For immunisation enquiries, please contact the relevant NHS Board vaccination teams:
